Frequently Asked Questions

What is a columbarium?

A columbarium is an above-ground structure for the placement of cremated remains. These structures contain several columbaria niches that house urns and personal mementos, and they can be built indoors or out.

What is a columbarium niche?

A niche is a single unit within a columbarium, where ashes are placed after cremation. There are traditional fully-enclosed options, or modern glass front niches that invite more personalized tributes. Other variables include columbarium niche dimensions, along with features such as lighting, plaques, and flower vases that can be incorporated.

Why do I need a columbarium?

As cremation rates continue to rise, more cemetery, church, and funeral home owners are recognizing the value of including columbaria niches in their facilities. Our beautifully designed columbaria enhance the visual appeal of your memorial garden while adding significant benefits, such as maximizing usable space and potentially increasing revenue.

What materials are used to construct a columbarium?

We design and construct our columbaria with either an aluminum or all-granite interior. Our combined granite and aluminum columbaria offer strength, design flexibility, and ease of maintenance in all weather conditions. Additionally, by not building our units entirely out of stone or hard materials, we can incorporate columbarium niches of larger size.

For the exterior, granite is the most extensively used material. We provide material samples to ensure your satisfaction.

Is there a standard columbarium niche size?

With other builders, a standard columbarium niche measures 12” x 12” x 12”. But with the unique construction process employed by Kyber, we expand our standard measurement to 13” high x 12” wide x 14” deep. This larger columbarium niche size accommodates a wider range of urn sizes and designs. Additionally, we can craft columbaria niches to your specific size requirements.

What is the difference between a columbarium and a mausoleum?

While both serve a similar purpose in that they are buildings that house the remains of the deceased, there is a distinction. A mausoleum is for caskets, whereas a columbarium is for cremated remains. However, some mausolea include areas for cremation columbarium niches. We look forward to discussing how to incorporate columbarium niches into your design plans.

Which type of building is better for my organization’s needs?

With cremation rates on the rise, columbarium niches are the most forward-thinking option for many organizations. That said, at KyberCC we begin every collaboration with a comprehensive look at your organization’s needs, strategic vision, and budget. Other variables can include cultural or religious preferences, as well as logistics such as government regulations and available space to accommodate specific columbarium and niche sizes.

How much does it cost to put ashes in a columbarium?

Columbarium niche space ranges in cost based on materials, size, and other factors. Likewise, the price of columbaria for your organization varies by materials used, size, decorative enhancements, and other options.

What should I consider when placing a columbarium?

In addition to aesthetic preferences, size, and location considerations, there may be additional government regulations that we are ready to assist you with. In many cases, columbaria are relocatable, so they offer flexibility if needs change.

Can you create a family columbarium?

As with any of our custom designs and projects, we would be honoured to help you provide a private or family columbarium, whether for existing clients or as a future service. The Holt unit is designed especially for this purpose.

Does your standard columbarium niche size accommodate multiple urns?

Our columbarium niches accommodate two standard-sized urns. If you require custom columbarium niche dimensions, please contact us. We can build an entire columbarium with niches sized to your specifications.

What can I do to add memorialization to a columbarium niche?

There are many options for memorialization, like direct engraving, bronze plaques, and more. We also encourage you to read more about the benefits of glass-front niches, as they offer unique options for personal memorialization.

What happens if something you have installed breaks or needs repair?

At Kyber, we build everything to stand the test of time. We are so confident in our craftsmanship that our columbaria and niches are backed by a 25-year warranty. Should anything happen to your columbaria, we offer repairs and ongoing maintenance support.

Do you provide other memorial construction services?

Yes, in addition to columbarium niches for cremation, we build civic monuments and unique memorial benches. Commemorate historical events, honour community members, and bring awareness to important milestones with meaningful structures.
